See you next year!

So this is our last post until next summer. We had a great time and all told, $24,000 was raised and will go towards the River City Dragon Boat Research Grant at Health Sciences Centre. We can’t wait to do it again next year! This was the first year of a three year partnership with Manitoba Paddling Association and we just got our feet wet. Wait until you see what’s coming next. Have a good winter and good paddling!

“Now that was fun!” – A message from Sally Flintoft

An incredible weekend…………now we know what the River City Dragon Boat Festival is all about — great competition; lots of laughter; inspiring stories of why individuals participate, lots of food and a little bit of beer, tons of sun block; families and friends celebrating a great weekend outdoors.

Thank you to everyone who participated this weekend — all the paddlers and drummers …..and of course my favourite — the steerers. All of the volunteers from the Manitoba Paddling Association. All the people who came and cheered us on. And on a personal note — the staff of the HSC Foundation who volunteered and worked hard all weekend. Finally — the donors who gave so generously to support research at Health Sciences Centre Foundation. We can’t wait to give you an update on the impact of your support.

See you next year ……..or maybe before on the River — after all I have a lot of practicing to do.

Tales from the Dragon Boat Benches – a post from Sally Flintoft

Am really excited to be part of the HSC Foundation Dragon Boat team — a great group of people — we had a good practice last night — ready to go for this weekend with one slight flaw in our plan — The Steerer! (is there such a word or have I just coined a Palinism?) Seems like I have offered and in the absence of anyone else objecting to steer our boat — one problem — don’t know how to do it so last night after trying and sending us in circles I had a little lesson form a very nice person named Don — and another team who graciously allowed me o join their boat for a practice…………gracious because I really don’t know how to steer and while I corrected the problem of going in circles — managed to get a straight line right toward another boat —- which resulted in the cry from our boat — STOP THE BOAT!….which worked. Underway again — I put us on track for the river bank.

In order to salvage the situation — I went for a swim………………….in the river ………………..everyone was very nice………….I have a bruise………..

Pledge a Paddler Online!

Due to the high volume of requests we have received for online pledges, we have created an set it up so that a person may pledge a paddler online. Please have their name and/or boat name handy….

Sorry for the inconvenience folks, we hope to have this and other options available to dragonboat paddlers and supports, available earlier next year. Contact vmirosh@hsc.mb.ca if you have any questions.
